What captain does not dream of playing 90 minutes in June? That, along with having your team’s name on the trophy, is the prizaeon offer with the SIFL Cup. Only four winners had their names etched on the pot last decade, who’s name will be engraved in 2010? The first round proper took place on Saturday with the holders, Azzuri, facing First Division league leaders, the Voodoo. 16 teams were whittled down to 8. To find out the runners and riders left in this year’s SIFL Cup, read on.

Defending champions the Azzuri cantered to victory against the Voodoo on Saturday. 5-2 they ran out winners in a tie that many had whispered could have been a potential banana skin. Guillaume Leclercq’s fourth hat-trick of the season secured the Italian's place in the second round as well as his fourth MoM award of this season. Jose Lorenzo Lopes and Ben Baiye also found themselves on the score sheet. An understrength Voodoo side can take heart from the performance against the Premiership leaders. Consolation goals from Frazer McKeen and Kyle Hayes (MoM) will give them some confidence as they enter the season’s final stages. The Azzuri now turn their attentions to next week’s clash with the Shooters.

The Shooters also made light work of their encounter with the Crazy Turks, seeing them off 13-1. Roland Broughton stole the headlines with his four goals, his first his 100th for the Shooters. Jon Banks’ two strikes ensured he kept the title of Shooters’ top scorer this season (if we include cup goals). He now has 16 against Zippy’s 15. Elsewhere, Jon Grant (MoM) hit the barn door after eight games of searching, he and Yasuhiro Chiba grabbed a hat-trick a piece. Michael McGirr also found his way onto the score sheet to complete the rout. Calamaty Mo at the back cost the Shooters a clean sheet, although an unnamed source from inside the camp is that, completely out of character, he refused to shoulder the blame. Huseyin Ates took full advantage of the error and made no mistakes with a clinical strike, his third of the season. Saidu Kamara earned himself the Turks’ MoM award though the game was marred by an injury to Ahmet Dal who broke his ankle in the contest. The SIFL wishes him a speedy return to action.

The Puxi Lions pipped the Krauts for a spot in the second round with a hard-fought 1-0 victory. Charles Georg’s second half strike was the only thing that could separate the two sides, his fourth of the campaign keeping the Lions’ dreams of a double alight, whilst defeat leaves the Krauts to focus on Premiership survival. Georg’s performance won him the MoM honours for the Lions whilst stopper Nicolas Moeller secured the German honours.

In one of the days most entertaining encounters of the day, the Beaver secured safe passage through to the second round despite ending the match with nine men: 5-0 they ran out victors against the Vikings. Two goals from Nick Muzycka and strikes from Misha Bobylev, Leslie Campbell and Cyrille Laoukoura won the match for the Beaver though victory did come at a price. Two yellows ensured Chris Zhou had an early bath, whilst Paulo Pedroso’s goal line clearance with his hands means both players miss next week’s clash against the Oranje. Kristian Krushår’s performance for the Vikings won him the MoM award, Muzycka scooped the same for the Beaver.

In the day’s other all-Premiership affair, the Oranje saw off the challenge of relegation favorites the Cosmos with a fine 3-1 victory. A brace from Pieter Wijffels was enough to keep the Dutch’s cup dreams alive, a comical Cosmos own goal put the icing on the cake. Coupled with Buyi Wang’s MoM performance, Tom Bus had many positives to draw from the day’s play. Jordan Campbell’s goal and MoM award, his first of the season, proved mere consolation for the Cosmos. They must now turn their attentions to Premiership survival as they currently occupy the second relegation spot, one point adrift of third from bottom the Beaver, and two points shy of the Krauts’ 8 points. They can also look forward to their Hebiguchi cup semi-final against the Shooters in early April.

Hebiguchi Cup finalists Japan eased through to round two with a comfortable victory against a Shanghai Krauts – Die Zweite team who played the full 90 minutes with just nine men. Strikes from Kazuhisa Okawa (4), Mahiro Hayakawa (2, MoM) and Hirosi Shiozaki was all that separated the two sides as the game finished 7-0. Daniel Berger’s battling display won him the Krauts’ MoM award and credit should be awarded to the Krauts for turning up – epitomising all that is good about the SIFL. The only real downer for the Germans was Marco Engelhardt’s yellow which means he now must sit out next week’s match against the Voodoo for exceeding 10 crime points this season.

ReUnited ensured their name went in the hat for the second round though they were made to work hard for the 2-1 victory thanks to a battling display from Long Tang. Four debuts for ReUnited – they have now used a staggering 50 players this season - reckoned to be 24% of Shanghai’s footballing population - kept things fresh and did much to put last week’s disappointment behind them. Jorge Eduardo Onofre Rios and Antione de Mathelin (MoM) got the vital goals for ReUnited. Xu Zhiwei got the goal and the MoM award for Long Tang. Jeff Wu can reflect positively on Long Tang’s performance, they have much to take into their final games in their debut season. Currently bottom, Long Tang have 6 games left to close the gap on the Turks, who currently lie 2 points ahead.

ReUnited will face cup specialists Anzacs in the quarter finals. Fresh from topping up their tans in Manila last week, they maintained their solid record in 2010. 2-0 they ran out winners against out-of-form Corea. Stu Willy and Bjorn Isaksson were on the score sheet for the Anzacs though it was Connor Trendall who stole the show with his MoM performance in the middle of the park. Seoul Min’s battling display won him the Corean MoM award. Anzacs cemented the SIFL’s status as one of Asia’s strongest amateur league’s earlier this month by taking home the Manila Vets Plate trophy (pictured). Chris Golding’s seven strikes won him the golden boot award. Congratulations to them from everybody at the SIFL and Urbanatomy.com.
