They deliver food, now they're delivering tunes...

Sherpa's have a new song for when your call is on hold. We tracked down their song man, Gav Munro (who also happens to be their marketing manager in Hangzhou), for this exclusive chinwag.

The melody sounds weirdly familiar. It's not - heaven forbid - Britney is it?
The melody is indeed Britney Spears' song 'Baby One More Time.' I've been playing it around the bars and clubs in Hangzhou for about three years now, I sing and play the guitar and try and play popular stuff and also songs that get people singing and partying. This one never fails! So when me, Zoe (Sherpa's Marketing Manager) and Mark (Sherpa's founder-owner) we're originally talking about doing something different for Sherpa's hold music, this was an obvious choice. I have done a few songs so far, some of them are popular melodies with Sherpa's lyrics, but I've also written a few original melodies. I think the plan is to put a new song on each week. So far I've done parodies of Blues, Johnny Cash and John Denver.

Whose idea was to write it?
It was one of those brain-storming sessions that Sherpa's like to encourage. Being on hold can be a pain, listening to same old music can send you into a trance. What we've tried to do is the opposite, we're trying to engage the customer by playing a silly song and hopefully cheering them up. Writing the songs took some time, I've been writing songs for a long time but there is only so much you can write about food delivery and waiting (and be slightly amusing)! We're also trying to encourage people to use the Sherpa's online ordering system (www.sherpas.com.cn), so it was a good way to let people know about that. In the end I wrote out all the vocabulary I could on a huge piece of paper, stuck it up in the apartment and it must have slowly crept into the unconscious because I found I was having ideas for songs in the most strangest places!

What else have you written?

I've been writing, in bands and on my own for a while now. I am from Manchester in the UK and there was, and still is a great live music scene. Everyone either plays football or guitar. I had a recording studio there for five years as well, which recorded some cool bands like Elbow. I've written too many songs to mention, some OK, some terrible. I'm hoping to start a small recording studio in Hangzhou soon, but in the meantime these little hold songs keep me out of trouble!

Feed me Sherpa's
Music by Britney; lyrics by Gav

Oh Sherpa's baby I need something warm to eat
Please answer the phone
Oh Sherpa's baby- I cannot get onto my feet
Hear my belly groan

Feed me, something that is meaty, double cheesy
Cos I got a need I can’t control

My hungry ass is killin’ me
I must confess I need to eat
Come get your driver deliver me
My belly moans-Sherpa's please pick up the phone

Oh Sherpa's baby
The reason I eat is you
You make me kinda lazy
But Sherpa's baby, this hold music is …. eeew
It’s driving me real crazy

Feed me pizza and spaghetti
Calamari with a little side…of French fries

My hungry ass is killin’ me
I must confess I need to eat
Come get your driver deliver me
My belly moans-Sherpa's please pick up the phone

It only works if you're really really hungry.
