Food Reviews
Monday, 02 November 2009 06:11 Written by Jalean Wong Progress has a different meaning for everybody. For some it entails digging up and paving over a good portion of one of Shanghai’s most enchanted green spaces in the city. It’s true. renovating the Ruijin Guesthouse complex resulted in some truly sad restaurant casualties; fortunately Colors has been resurrected. From what we can tell, they used the temporary closure to implement a subtle makeover. The main indoor dining room now hints playfully at a pastoral setting with earth tones and pale green leather couches. But, naturally, the real draw is the gorgeously serene patio (they’ve made it a real point to leave it untouched). Food-wise, the menu’s still an oddball combination of Western standbys like steaks as well as Thai classics. Their simple pomelo salad (RMB65) is anything but. Fresh shrimp, crispy fried shallots and a spicy tangy dressing perfectly accentuate the sweet pomelo segments. Indecisive? Try the appetizer assortment for two (RMB88). It’s a winning platter of prawn cakes, delightfully aromatic fish cakes, vegetable spring rolls and pandan chicken. Their green chicken curry (RMB58) is also pretty tasty. The great food, stellar service and, who can forget, that patio are all good reasons to venture to this neck of the woods again and revisit the place. And with mammoth trees towering over you and autumn leaves rustling in the wind, you just might forget you’re in the city.
